Boeing revealed New Loyal-Wingman

 Boeing has revealed New Loyal-Wingman as a new concept of UCAV like FCAS, S-70, X-47B, and they announced Australia involved in this project. Some summarized features and figures from the link are shown below.

  • It is built in Australia and intended for export around the globe. Exports will be easier without having to go through U.S. FMS process. 
  • A prototype is being built now.
  • Can fly with or without a manned partner.
  • Has a range of roughly 2,000 miles.
  • Is 38 feet long and uses a bizjet class engine.
  • Will team with E-7, EA-18G, F/A-18E/F, and P-8 Poseidon.
  • Modular design for 'snap-in' payloads and rapid reconfiguration capability.
  • Initial configuration will be sensor/intelligence and electronic warfare focused.
  • Controlled via ground station, other aircraft, and has some level of autonomy that can scale for the mission. 
  • Design was based mainly on what would be attractive to a global market full of cash-strapped air arms.
  • Will be tested over Australia's vast deserts where there is tons of room for experimentation. (Probably based out of Woomera)
  • The technology and development will be sourced locally in Australia.
  • Boeing will be able to adapt the technology for foreign customers far easier than developing and building in the United States. 








 Core concepts of the system are 'stealth', 'team-work', 'modular-payload', 'big-sensor', and 'long-range(2000nm ferry?)' while small-business-jet engine based propulsion probably do not pursue supersonic performance. Still, there is a possibility that low-supersonic performance (<M1.4) can be obtained depending on the thrust, but it could degrade range performance. 


 Initial configuration of the concept will concentrate on ISR and electronic warfare. Boeing probably propose these aircraft as a good redeem-er for the Super-hornet family which has lack of stealth, and long-range. 

 External configuration of the jet is similar to Northrop-Grumman's JSF; usual UCAV configuration is flying-wing and is very interesting. Most recent military purpose UAV of Boeing, MQ-25, is also the conventional wing-configuration rather than flying-wing. Probably, Boeing, one of the biggest airliner maker, already has confidence that they could optimize range performance of the aircraft without choosing flying-wing configuration. Because they selected V-tail, they could use simpler flaperon. 

 Relatively big-sized nose could adopt independent level of radar compared to other slim-sized flying wing configuration. Modular payload would be located at the beneath of the jet containing AIM-120s, SDBs, ECM pods. Because of the small size, only one JDAM-ER is probably loaded like weapon pod of Advanced Hornet (Weapon-Pod-for-Super-Advanced-Hornet




 The aircraft could attract many air forces suffering lack of the number of aircraft due to their high cost. Without harming range performance of the big-manned aircraft, the concept pursue day-1-strike capability. I expected that the aircraft targeted high-subsonic or low supersonic with stealth performance while about one-advanced-weapon-pod is internally carried probably
