German decides replacement for Tornado ECR and IDS(?)

 German's Luftwaffe decide to buy 30 Super Hornet w/ Nuclear capability and 15 Growler as a replacement for the aged Tornado IDS and ECR (https://theaviationgeekclub.com/germany-approves-super-hornet-growler-buy-to-replace-luftwaffe-tornado-fighter-bombers/). 

 As shown in the Airbus' plan, France and German try to develop a New jet fighter for their own Air-Force, however, aged Tornado fleet probably needs more urgent replacement than the mock-up stage aircraft. Indeed, Super Hornet would be selected as a new platform of the Luftwaffe. 

 Now, Boeing, maker of Super Hornet, has new customer for its manned military jet fighter, and they could propose their upgrade options like weapon pod or conformal fuel tank. (https://jaesan-aero.blogspot.com/2018/02/weapon-pod-for-super-advanced-hornet.html)

 Interesting point is that Luftwaffe also orders more Eurofighter as a partner of the Super Hornet. Super Hornet is generally regarded as a more Air-to-Ground mission platform than the Eurofighter. Although Eurofighter tried to expand their role to AtG mission, German might not satisfy the compatibility of the Eurofighter. 

 It will be interesting that German requires Nuclear capability for the Super Hornet. And what will be other 'German Options' for the Super Hornet?

3. Aircraft DB

 Lift and drag configuration of the generic body and wing is more opened to public [1, 2]; also I had summarized lift and drag information related to generic airliner configuration. (3. Summary CFD Workshop : 3.1.1) High fidelity data is available while generic equation is used to make single-aisle airliner aerodynamic DB.

1) Lift - Simple formula for Wing and Fuselage

Lift of the main wing and body can easily be estimated by the formula and specification








2) Drag - Simple formula for Wing and Fuselage


Drag of the main wing and body is more complex than the lift. Composition of the drag component is shown below. Form factor(pressure), Skin-Friction, Interference, and Wave drag are added or multiplied to provide the estimated value. 





 3) Comparison - Reference Vs Formula

Because formula based generic body is not same body of the reference, there will be a difference. However, I could expect similar trend between the generic one and result from the reference. Both aircraft did not take account the tail or other effect.

1. Trajectory DB

 Compare to the Missile-SIM, Flight-SIM has more options than the previous one. Indeed Trajectory DB has more complex options than the previous one. There is a few update after the previous article. (Flight-SIM : DB Structure of the SIM


<Trajectory Input DB>

 1) Act_num : Identification number for the each action
 2) Action : Information for Action 
     - START : Set up of Initial State (Lat, Long position and flight direction)
     - RESERVE : Fuel Reserve usually for 5% of initial fuel
     - TO : Take-Off action uses TOGA thrust fuel flow for specified time at given speed and altitude
     - SID : Climb action for limited fpm and speed which did not counted for range
     - CLIMB : Climb action for several options (specified VS, Speed or Optimal ROC) with range 
     - CRUISE : Cruise with optimal cruise altitude/speed or Specific altitude/speed
     - DESCEND : Descend action as same as CLIMB
     - LOITERING : loitering before STAR action which did not counted for range
     - STAR : Descend action as same as SID
     - LD : Landing action uses 80% power for specified time at given speed and altitude
 3) Opt [On/OFF] : On/Off option for TO/LD, SID/STAR only, and % of reserve fuel
 4) Others are Specification for each action
     - If required data were not specified, program find optimal profile for CLIMB/CRUISE/DESCEND
 5) Cfg/Cfg_eng : Identification number for Configuration of the aircraft
     - Configuration number means that each number load different engine or aircraft DB
       (it is useful for multi-mode engine for Aerospace plane) 



2. Engine DB

 Missile-SIM only requires ISP value for the engine with burn-time and amount of fuel; Flight-SIM engine needs separated DB because thrust, fuel-flow, drag, inlet performance, CD, and CM value are affected by Throttle, Alt, AoA, Flight Mach conditions.

 Engine throttle values are chosen for 0, 70, 85, 100, and 110; these represent off, idle, cruise, climb, and TOGA condition for high bypass engine while off, idle, cruise, mil power, full AB for other type of engines respectively. 

 Unfortunately, these specific engine data is not disclosed by engine manufacturers, and author have to estimate the performance value from the generic formula as shown below. 

 1) SFC - Thrust and Fuel Flow

 2) Thrust change for Altitude and Mach number conditions

 3) Inlet Performance

There is no kind of generic formula; but if type or number of the shock is chosen, rough scale of the pressure recovery is already known.

 4) Drag, CL, CM

Impact of thrust on the drag, lift, and momentum is known, however, in this case, specific value of the three sheet will be set to zero. 

More specific value for these threes will be described when more specific aircraft design is proceeded.

 Interesting article for the new usage of the Meteor missile as SEAD purpose.

 Because Meteor has long-range and high speed flight profile, it is appropriate to this role. 

 As the range and fatality of the Air-Defense is increased, 'Silver Bullet' Role missile using scramjet or hypersonic glider is receiving attention, however, those missile will probably be carried by large platform for a while. Before the maturity of the scramjet or hypersonic glider is enough to make small tactical missile, SEA-TEOR can be an useful Stop-Gap option for the usual tactical aircraft.
