Meteor as New Anti-Radar missile for SEAD?
In the previous news article, there is a possibility that Meteor missile can be converted to SEAD missile replacing AGM-88 in Europe. Due to the Meteor's high kinematic energy via ramjet, Meteor could reach long range target compared to the conventional rocket motors.
Recent SAMs like S300, 400, and 500 series threat every kinds of aerial platform with its advanced radar, and long range projectile. Western world already have a lot of short range air-to-ground weapons with high precision such as many LGB, SDB, SPEAR, BRIMSTONE, and other GBU. These focused on the precision strike with moderate destruction. Despite their effectiveness against ground targets, these cannot be a silver bullet for the highest level of air-defense.
Taurus, Storm-shadow, and JSOW type also take a part in inventory of the 4.5th generation fighters, and these can be an option for dealing with the advanced SAMs. Their long range, advanced navigation system and low signature against the radar and IR are better than the previous options, however, they cannot provide supersonic speed like AGM-88s.
AGM-88 and aged ALARM missiles are typical load-out against SAMs, and they proved their effectiveness for several times; now Meteor can be a new AGM-88 for the advanced SAM? Let us test it.
1) I tested AIM-120C as Air-to-Ground profile (5000, 10000, 30000ft)
2) I tested AIM-120C as Air-to-Ground profile (5000, 10000, 30000ft) with longer gliding path
3) I tested Meteor as Air-to-Ground profile (5000, 10000, 30000ft)
Although Meteor missile has disadvantage in its complexity around the ramjet inlet, Air-to-Ground profile could hide this characteristics. Long-burn and high ISP propulsion provides much longer range than the rocket propelled AIM-120C class missile.
AIM-120C class missile reaches about maximum 50km for its long gliding shot, however, generic ramjet missile, assumed as Meteor, act like a supersonic cruise missile.
Before the hypersonic scramjet silver-bullet is fully matured, HARMeteor can be a good option for the SEAD weapon of Western world.
