Initial Design of Hydrogen Semi-BWB type Transport based on Operational Performance


 My personel research for future aircraft is now on-going publishing phase. I will go on new approach for aircraft design and sizing with new application. 

 This study is proposal for hydrogen based aircraft for C-130 class transport. Optimization of the configuration is conducted via operation effectiveness analysis. 




Abstract

 Burning hydrocarbon based jet fuel from transport aircraft occupies significant part of the total carbon emission of world, and hydrogen fueled one can be a next generation transport for zero-carbon. Hydrogen fuel has relatively higher specific heat per unit mass however it requires much larger volume for fuel tank due to its low density and keeping low temperature of LH2. This study proposes Semi-BWB type aircraft to satisfy fuel tank volume layout which of approach is less radical and viable for practical design. Integrated design framework including evaluation of aerodynamics, weight, and performance is configured; performance evaluation is not only limited to range also find suitability for air-route network with assigned operation frequency factor. Geometric design parameters of the main wing are selected and changed to find optimal configuration which has the best specific mileage and air-route coverage capability. This method could provide a new optimal LH2 transport aircraft design between choosing larger aircraft for long range and heavy payload and smaller one for better efficiency in short range and lighter payload.
